Love your post! Great to know that slow travel was possible even on a short trip. Your advice on “cutting must-see list in half” really resonates with me. The things you can do in your free time surely has the potential to create lot more memories. Thanks for sharing!

We thought that when we retired we would have to begin looking for one place to retire in but thanks to AirBNB we have been able to move from country to country living on our Social Security payments and a little bit of blog profits for years. I posted the site to help othesr find some really great apartments on a month to month basis, without it we would be lost.

People should slow down a little and pay more attention to what is going on around them. the world is gonna be going forward and no one can stop that but we could make it sort of less aggressive.

I’ve been slow traveling most of my life and would find it difficult to go any other way. A completely different experience of the world. I often take children and grandchildren along because the learning is so rich and deep. My “in progress” series of children’s books introduces children to other countries and encourages people to include young kids on international trips.

Been in Mexico a year and moving to Thailand next month. What an amazing adventure!

I love to visit places that see few tourists which means that there’s only so many must-sees to check off the list, leaving you plenty of time to wander around the place. Also because these places are less touristy, tacky souvenir hawkers and over-the-top “authentic” local cuisine restaurants wouldn’t buy away local business premises.

What would also be helpful is to seek out an alternative mode of transport. When travelling from the mountains to the shore in Montenegro, many travellers usually take the bus. I insisted on taking the train which means several detours on the bus and half-day wait to get to the station some 100 miles away. but this brought me to a small local town which rarely sees foreigners and you get a really raw feel of the place you are visiting. I spent 5 hours waiting for the train at the station, where I’m the only foreigner among 5 other passengers. I don’t speak Montenegrin but I had a very tacit conversation with the station’s only barkeeper using body languages and the help of the how-to-speak-Montenegrin chapter in my guidebook. It was a worthwhile detour.
